Nano - small, stylish, desirable
the world's thinnest, lightest hand-held terminal

Comfortable, smart, professional
Waiters want primarily to concentrate their skills on customer service. Because Nano was designed from the waiter's point of view, waiters are pleased to use them. They are the size and weight of the notepads on which waiters would previously have handwritten their orders.
 
Nano fits easily into a shirt pocket or the top pocket of a waiter's jacket and can be attached by lanyard to avoid it being mislaid. It has a long battery life and typically needs to be charged just once a week in an average restaurant.
 
Pictures - a universal language
Pictures are recognised more quickly than words. Waiters come from many parts of the world and may not speak fluently the language of the country they work in. Waiters log on to Nano by touching a picture of a waiter and open a table by touching a picture of a table.
 
Departments can be represented by numbers and pictures, so waiters can touch a picture of a steak to open up a list of steaks. Or, if they know Department 3 is Steaks, they can touch the number. Nano contains a mixture of graphics and text lists. As familiarity with the Nano grows, waiters can use whichever they find to be quicker.
 
 


 
There is virtually no limit to the number of Nanos that can communicate via a single Bluetooth access point. If orders are taken outside the communication area they will be transmitted when the Nano returns within range of the access point.

 

Before Nano arrived on the scene
In the UK and Eire, we are very familiar with handheld wireless technology - we all use mobile phones.
 
But although hospitality business owners want them, handheld devices for restaurants have not been in mainstream use because they have been expensive and complex.
 
Nano changes all that

The decision for Bluetooth communication


Over the years, various ways of communicating wirelessly have been tried - infra red, radio frequency, DECT and wi fi. Although some are better than others, they all have shortcomings regarding reliability or cost.
 
Labware chose a customised version of enhanced Bluetooth because it proved to be more effective in the areas of power consumption, reliability, distance, security and simplicity.
 
Reliable communications up to 250 metres in each direction from a Geller Labware Bluetooth access point give effective coverage of 500 metres.
 
The distance is reduced in buildings with metal girders and thick walls, but even the largest restaurant should be covered with a single access point. Only huge areas such as football stadia will require more than one access point.
